The March 2025 Core Update Rewarded SEO That Looks More Like Expertise

Google’s March 2025 core update rolled out from March 13 through March 27, and Search Engine Journal covered the completion of the update as ranking volatility settled. Around the same time, Trust Insights was talking about the change management challenge in AI-era SEO: businesses were no longer optimizing only for Google rankings and human readers, but also for AI systems that retrieve, summarize and compare information.

For small and medium sized businesses, the practical lesson is familiar but sharper: thin content is getting riskier. Local service pages, product pages and blog posts need to prove they come from a real business with real experience.

Core updates are not just technical events

It is tempting to treat every core update like a technical SEO problem. Technical health matters, but core updates often expose deeper issues: weak topical coverage, repetitive content, generic advice, poor authorship signals or pages that do not answer the searcher’s real question.

Brand Fuel Digital CEO/Founder Paul Burns says the best response is to audit usefulness, not just rankings. “When an SMB gets hit by a core update, the question is not only which keyword dropped. The better question is whether the page deserves to be the best answer. Does it show proof, local context, experience and a clear next step? If not, there is the work.”

What SMBs should audit after a core update

  • Service depth: Each major service page should explain who it is for, what is included, where it is offered and what customers should expect.
  • Evidence: Add photos, examples, testimonials, FAQs, process details and credentials where they are legitimate.
  • Content overlap: Consolidate pages that compete with each other or say the same thing with slightly different wording.
  • Local trust: For local businesses, service areas, team details, reviews and business profile consistency matter.
  • AI visibility: Structure content so both people and AI systems can understand the entity, offer and expertise.

Brand Fuel Digital’s View

The March update was another reminder that SEO is moving away from shallow keyword coverage and toward recognizable expertise. AI search makes that even more important because summaries and answer engines need clear, trustworthy source material.

The best SMB SEO strategy is not to publish more for the sake of volume. It is to build a site that teaches, proves and converts. If a page would not help a customer make a confident decision, it probably is not strong enough for modern SEO either.
