The November Reviews Update Raised the Bar for Comparison Content
Google’s November 2023 reviews update continued the year’s focus on quality review content. For websites that publish comparisons, recommendations, best-of lists or affiliate-style content, the update reinforced that thin summaries and generic claims were getting riskier.
SMBs may not think of themselves as review publishers, but many create similar content: “best service for,” “how to choose,” product comparisons, testimonials and buyer guides. Those pages need to be useful, transparent and grounded in real experience.
Comparison content should help the buyer decide
Strong comparison content explains tradeoffs. It does not simply crown the business as the best choice. A helpful page might explain who a service is right for, when another option makes sense, what customers should ask before buying and what proof supports the recommendation.
Brand Fuel Digital CEO/Founder Paul Burns says this kind of content can be a trust builder when done honestly. “A small business can stand out by being useful before the sale. If your comparison content helps customers make a smarter decision, it builds credibility even before they contact you.”
How to strengthen review-style content
- Use firsthand insight. Include real examples, product knowledge, service experience or customer questions.
- Explain criteria. Tell readers how options are evaluated.
- Avoid empty superlatives. Claims like best, fastest or cheapest need context and support.
- Disclose relationships. Affiliate or partner relationships should be clear.
Brand Fuel Digital’s View
The November reviews update showed that trust content needs substance. SMBs should use comparison and review-style pages to educate, qualify and build confidence, not to publish thin promotional copy dressed up as advice.
