WordPress 5.0 and Gutenberg Changed the Content Publishing Workflow

WordPress 5.0, named “Bebo,” was released on December 6, 2018 with the new block-based Gutenberg editor. For businesses using WordPress, the release changed the way pages and posts were built, edited and maintained.

For SMBs, the block editor was both an opportunity and a transition challenge. It made content layout more flexible, but it also required teams to understand how themes, plugins, reusable blocks and editing workflows could affect the site.

Publishing became more modular

Blocks encouraged businesses to think in reusable content sections: calls to action, testimonials, service summaries, image/text groups, FAQs and embedded media. That could make content updates easier when handled thoughtfully.

Burns’ advice was to use the new workflow strategically. “The editor should make publishing easier, but it should not turn every page into a design experiment. SMBs still need consistency, speed and a clear path to conversion.”

What SMBs should have checked

  • Theme compatibility: Confirm layouts and templates behave correctly.
  • Plugin conflicts: Test forms, SEO tools and page elements after updates.
  • Reusable sections: Standardize calls to action and trust blocks.
  • Editor training: Give staff simple rules for publishing clean content.

Brand Fuel Digital’s View

WordPress 5.0 made content publishing more flexible, but flexibility needs governance. SMBs should use blocks to move faster while preserving brand consistency and conversion clarity.
